Raja Yoga: The Royal Path to Present Moment Awareness

Author, Meditation Teacher & Transformational Speaker

Imagine a tranquil morning, the sun gently kissing the horizon, and the world waking up to a new day. This serene moment invites us to pause, breathe, and connect with the present—a concept at the heart of Raja Yoga. Known as the «royal path,» Raja Yoga is a journey of self-discovery, guiding us inward to find peace and enlightenment. Let’s explore this beautiful practice together, weaving in the essence of mindfulness and presence.

Raja Yoga, one of the four major paths of yoga, is often referred to as the «king of yogas» because it emphasizes the mind’s control and discipline. Unlike the more physically demanding practices such as Hatha Yoga, Raja Yoga focuses on meditation and mental clarity. It’s a path that encourages us to look within, to understand our true nature, and to realize the profound peace that comes from being fully present.

The Eight Limbs of Raja Yoga

The teachings of Raja Yoga are encapsulated in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, a foundational text in yoga philosophy. Patanjali outlines an eightfold path, known as Ashtanga Yoga, which serves as a roadmap for the spiritual journey. Each limb is a step toward greater self-awareness and inner peace.

  1. Yamas (Ethical Disciplines): The yamas are the moral guidelines that encourage harmonious living. They include non-violence (ahimsa), truthfulness (satya), non-stealing (asteya), continence (brahmacharya), and non-greed (aparigraha). These principles remind us to live in a way that respects ourselves and others, fostering a sense of community and compassion.
  2. Niyamas (Observances): The niyamas are personal practices that cultivate self-discipline and spiritual growth. They include purity (saucha), contentment (santosha), self-discipline (tapas), self-study (svadhyaya), and surrender to a higher power (Ishvara pranidhana). These observances encourage us to take responsibility for our own growth, embracing the present moment as an opportunity for transformation.
  3. Asanas (Postures): While many associate yoga with physical postures, in Raja Yoga, asanas are seen as a way to prepare the body for meditation. The goal is to create a stable and comfortable seat, allowing the mind to focus inward without distraction.
  4. Pranayama (Breath Control): Pranayama involves regulating the breath to calm the mind and energize the body. By controlling our breath, we can influence our mental state, bringing ourselves into the present and creating a bridge between the physical and spiritual realms.
  5. Pratyahara (Withdrawal of the Senses): This practice involves turning our senses inward, away from external distractions. It’s about finding stillness and silence within, allowing us to focus on our inner world.
  6. Dharana (Concentration): Dharana is the practice of single-pointed concentration. It teaches us to focus our mind on a single object, thought, or mantra, building the mental discipline necessary for meditation.
  7. Dhyana (Meditation): Dhyana is the uninterrupted flow of concentration, leading to a meditative state. It’s in this state that we experience a deep connection with our true self, transcending the ego and the chaos of daily life.
  8. Samadhi (Enlightenment): The final limb, Samadhi, is the state of bliss and self-realization. It’s a profound sense of unity with the universe, where the individual self dissolves into the cosmic consciousness.

The Present Moment and Raja Yoga

My best selling book, «The Present Moment Is The Present,» beautifully articulates the importance of being fully present in our lives. Raja Yoga echoes this sentiment, teaching us that the present moment is where true peace and happiness reside. When we practice Raja Yoga, we learn to quiet the mind and let go of the incessant chatter that often pulls us away from the now.

Consider your morning routine. Instead of rushing through it on autopilot, Raja Yoga invites you to be mindful of each action. Feel the cool water on your skin as you wash your face, savor the aroma of your morning tea or coffee, and listen to the birds singing outside your window. These simple acts become moments of meditation, grounding you in the present and infusing your day with calm and clarity.

The Journey Within

Raja Yoga is often described as the journey within because it leads us to explore the depths of our consciousness. It’s a path that requires patience, discipline, and dedication, but the rewards are immeasurable. As we progress, we begin to peel away the layers of our conditioned mind, uncovering our true self—a self that is inherently peaceful, joyful, and connected to the world around us.

In this fast-paced world, where we are constantly bombarded with information and distractions, Raja Yoga offers a sanctuary of stillness. It reminds us that we are not defined by our thoughts or our external circumstances. Instead, we are the calm observer, the silent witness to the unfolding of life.

Conclusion

Raja Yoga, with its emphasis on meditation and mental discipline, aligns perfectly with the values of mindfulness and presence. It teaches us that by turning inward, we can find the peace and clarity we seek. As you continue to explore and share the teachings of Raja Yoga, remember that the journey is just as important as the destination. Embrace each moment, and let the present be your guide.

By integrating the principles of Raja Yoga into your daily life, you will not only enhance your own well-being but also inspire others to embark on their own journey of self-discovery. After all, the present moment is a gift—a present that holds the key to our true nature and ultimate happiness.
